Welcome to Chatham Borough

History

In 1728 an early settler, John Day, built a bridge across the Passaic River and opened a tavern in the area. The village of Day’s Bridge with mills, a blacksmith and a church was established in the area. The village was named Chatham in 1773 after Sir William Pitt, the Earl of Chatham. Pitt, the Prime Minister of England, was revered as a champion of the American colonies in their struggle against King George Ill’s tax policies. The small town’s population increased after the Revolutionary War. Farmers began traveling on a road through the area, and railroad tracks were built in Chatham in 1837. Chatham Borough was established in 1897.
